Romeo Castellucci’s staging of the Richard Strauss opera Salome in Salzburg was nothing less than a veritable moment of greatness for the opera: Lithuanian soprano Asmik Grigorian made her debut in the title role and became an international stage star with her fascinating singing and acting skills. It is not without reason that she was honoured as the best female singer at the International Opera Awards in London 2019. Even more: The Financial Times found that the opera was „heard in its most perfect form to date“, in which both the dazzling Vienna Philharmonic under Franz Welser-Möst and the rest of the cast, including John Daszak, Anna Maria Chiuri, Gábor Bretz and Julian Prégardien, played their part. In future, the Salome will have to be measured against this memorable festival performance.
